Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida always wants you to have fun having fun in the game, even with the recently added AFK kick feature.

The MMO recently had a great time – it crushed its concurrent player count on Steam and even managed to sell digital copies. Even traditional World of Warcraft player Asmongold jumped on the hype, which likely helped the game’s peak somewhat.

While it was great to see Final Fantasy 14 blossom, it also means that the queues for servers are an absolute nightmare at the moment. Some free trial players have found that they are not allowed in at all, which naturally makes some people a little frustrated.

Square Enix tried to ease the congestion a bit, releasing a fix earlier this week that boots anyone from the server who has been idle for more than 30 minutes. This means that often busy areas like Limsa Lominsa have become noticeably quieter, with fewer players idling or dancing while they eat a bite or stroll around the real world.

Anyone who’s spent even a few hours in the game will know how essential these dense areas have become to the feel and community of the game, and that’s something Yoshida is aware of as well. In a message to players this morning, the director said he knows how important these interactions are to the overall experience and immersion.

“I’ve played a lot of MMOs myself, so I know how watching other players bustle about during meals prepares you physically and mentally for difficult dungeons later, and how a spontaneous dance performance can brighten up the atmosphere. everyone’s day, ”he wrote. “These are ways of playing a role, and they’re part of the fun of MMORPGs.

“Therefore, I want you to know that while I deeply appreciate that you are considerate, activities such as the above are also part of the game, and you do not need to exercise such restraint. to stop having fun! “

Yoshida went on to tell players to “enjoy FF14 in their own way” and “show our new players how alive her world is”. He also spoke of the difficulties the AFK timer brings to top anglers, saying “of course it’s okay to stay connected” while trying to wait for the big catches. The general message seems to be that there is nothing wrong with doing fun things like dancing or playing music, but be respectful to those who want to play too.

This isn’t the first time Final Fantasy 14 has had an AFK kick feature – Stormblood’s release implemented that as well. Square eventually took it a step further and enacted a server-wide daily kick because of people trying to bypass the kick via macros or timers. It was a bit bad.

It’s nice to see Yoshida trying to tackle the problem while being incredibly aware of how his own game culture works. He’s always been at the heart of Final Fantasy 14’s success, and it’s easy to see why the community respects him as much. Just look at the way he talks about World of Warcraft, by far its biggest competitor. I must love the guy.
