Gordon Elliott’s record-breaking 37 204-1 seven-time completes coach’s remarkable comeback after photo shame

Whisper it… but Gordon Elliott is back in full force.

And that can only increase the expectations of the Cheltenham Festival.

Elliott would have finished top trainer at last March’s festival had it not been for his ban after being pictured sitting on a dead horse.

But in just under three months since serving his sentence, Elliott is absolutely flying.

And he does everything without the horse he most regrets having seen leaving his stable: Sending Allen.

Elliott has said how sad he is to see the Cheveley Park Stud star leave his base in Cullentra.

But that horse fell at the Festival and collapsed in the pursuit of John Durkan last weekend.

It was the same weekend that Elliott set a record seven times in Navan.

The three-time Grand National coach has won seven of the eight races on the map – an astonishing feat with odds of 37,204-1.

It was also the first time that a coach in Great Britain or Ireland had saddled seven winners in a single meeting.

Oddly enough, Elliott shared the old record of six with Willie Mullins and Paul Nicholls.

And it was Mullins whose victory in the first race of the day kept Elliott from wiping out a clean sweep.

Still, the seven-timer – which punters remembered Frankie Dettori’s Magnificent Seven at Ascot in 1996 – marked a brilliant return to racing for Elliott, 43.

The delighted coach said afterwards: “It was an amazing day – to get seven winners on one track and at Navan as well, my home track.

“I don’t know if this has been done in Ireland before, but to have seven winners is amazing and we will never forget it.

“It’s special after the year we’ve had, it just shows what it means to the staff and all of my owners and friends.

“You see people like Noel Meade applauding you, they’re your real friends, I can’t believe it.

“We’re back to do what we love to do.”

Back indeed – and the timing couldn’t be better.
