WatchTime New York 2021 is less than a month away and returns for the sixth time to Gotham Hall in Midtown Manhattan from October 22-24. Among the more than 25 participating watch brands preparing to present their most recent timepieces is a historic fine watchmaking watch. House Breguet, which will present its new version Marine collection.
After a relatively quiet first half of 2021, Breguet last summer gave us all a break when the brand returned to center stage with the launch of its updated Marine collection. The latest update includes three new watches, the rose gold watch Navy 5517, blue numbered Marine Chronograph 5527, and Marine Musical Alarm 5547, which, in their debut, followed the last extension of the collection a year earlier, in June 2020. Thus, for the second year in a row and with an apparently positive effect, Breguet took advantage of the summer sentiment to arouse interest in its most sporty collection.
Like all Marine watches launched since the collection’s last major update in 2017 (and its expansion the following year), each of the new models retains a classic naval chronometer-inspired design, drawing mainly from the era of the founder Abraham-Louis Breguet. as a manufacturer of chronometers for the French navy. Distinguished by elements that are both luxurious and sporty, the watches house an array of distinctive signs, both of the collection and of its parent brand: Roman numerals, solid water resistances and Breguet-style hands, for n ‘ to name a few.
Breguet Marine 5517
The Marine 5517 with 18k rose gold case and bracelet is a three hand time and date watch, also available in titanium with a blue dial. With a diameter of 40 mm and a thickness of 11.5 mm, the piece fits well on the wrist, its sharp geometric crown guards and integrated lugs give it an extraordinary silhouette. The case finishes are mostly brushed, with polished accents and fluted sides. A stepped bezel at the top of the case secures the sapphire crystal. Speaking of the sporty style of the 100-meter water-resistant piece, it is secured to the wrist via a textured rubber strap, although Breguet also offers a matching rose gold strap and leather strap as alternative options.
Underneath the crystal is the distinctive dial, with the contrasting colors and textures that define the Marine collection. Around the outer edge, a curved outer ring is mirror polished, reflecting the lume-filled rose gold applied Roman numerals for each of the hours and providing an outline for the lume-accented minute ring. As the transition is made from the outermost part of the dial to the innermost part, we find three textures: from sunburst to brushed through a unique and engraved wave pattern reminiscent of the nautical inspirations of the show. In the center of the dial, a set of the brand’s signature Breguet hands indicates the hours and minutes, while a skeletonized counterweight hand counts the passing seconds. Overall, the style of the dial is intriguing and funky – a bit disorienting at first glance with its marine wave engravings and oblong date indicator, but obviously refined and meticulously planned.
The Breguet Caliber 777A is powered by the Breguet Caliber 777A, which is best known for containing an inverted inline lever escapement with silicon lugs, as well as for the use of a silicon balance spring. The movement is capable of a 55-hour power reserve and beats at a frequency of 4 Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Breguet Marine Chronograph 5527
The Marine Chronograph 5527 – as the name suggests, the chronograph version of the basic Marine design – uses a 42.3mm by 13.85mm titanium case, and is therefore lighter and sportier than its sibling. three rose gold hands despite sharing the same basic design. The most significant change in terms of the case is that the 5527 comes standard on a titanium H-link bracelet and features two oval chronograph pushers. The former can be replaced with a leather or rubber strap, and the latter allows ease of use for the chronograph functionality displayed on the watch face. The watch is also available in a rose gold version with the engraved wave pattern dial rather than the blue sunray dial of the titanium version.
The dial configuration of the Chronograph is again similar to that of the time and date model, with the luminous outer minute ring, the curved outer edge in a mirror finish and the applied Roman numeral hour markers. Here, however, we also see different sized sub-dials for the chronograph displays accentuating and contrasting the sunburst surface of the dial – 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, and seconds at 12 o’clock. ‘the clock. The oblong and visible date indicator of the Marine family has been placed on this dial at the 4:30 position.
The Breguet 582QA caliber that powers the Chronograph model is an automatic movement which, like the 777A, has an inverted line anchor escapement with lugs and a silicon balance spring. Due to its increased power consumption via its chronograph functionality, the movement stores a somewhat reduced power reserve of 48 hours and beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Breguet Marine Musical Alarm 5547
The Marine Alarme Musicale 5547 completes the trio of new versions, which has a mechanical alarm functionality as its main attraction. Like the other two watches, the 5547 is housed in the signature geometric case, here measuring 40mm in diameter by 13.05mm thick, and sporting various crowns and pushers to activate the timing and alarm function visible on the watch. dial. The version shown is the titanium case and blue dial edition, although the brand will also offer a version with a slate dial with a rose gold case and bracelet (below).
The dial is in the same blue hue used for the chronograph and accommodates sub-dials at 3 and 9 o’clock, the former featuring alarm functionality and the latter displaying a second time zone. Another dial detail to note is the additional power reserve indicator that Breguet added towards the 12 o’clock position, below the partially applied logo. The vertically positioned oblong date window sits securely in the asymmetrical style of the dial at the 6 o’clock position.
The Breguet Caliber 519F / 1, beating inside the watch and visible behind a sapphire caseback, drives the various complications of the Marine Alarm Musicale 5547, equipped with an inverted silicon in-line anchor escapement and a Silicon hairspring oscillating at a frequency of 28,800 vph to maintain a 45-hour power reserve.
