The developers of the original The Legend of Zelda game (Shigeru Miyamoto, Takeshi Tezuka and Koji Kondo) were interviewed for the Nintendo website, and asked why Hyrule’s fantasy name was used. Miyamoto said the name Hyrule came up when discussing the name of a high fantasy region. The original intention was to call the whole series Hyrule’s fantasy, but he was dropped after the first game. They didn’t know why this was the case, but one theory was that A link with the past / Triforce of the gods already had a subtitle, so adding another would make the name too long. The original Final fantasy game was also released after the first The Legend of Zelda game, and Hyrule’s fantasy the name sounds the same. The game was localized as THE legend of Zelda, it was therefore logical to keep this name.

It’s interesting to think of a world where Hyrule’s fantasy could have been the name of THE Legend of Zelda series, and it’s likely fans would have spent years complaining about how it looks too much like Final Fantasy. Yes Hyrule’s fantasy The name was chosen, this would then have allowed the developers to put aside including Princess Zelda in each game and focus on other characters as she would have lost the top spot from the start. The entire concept of the Triforce being linked to three characters (Ganondorf, Link and Zelda) could have been abandoned entirely, and the THE Legend of Zelda the series could have been unrecognizable.
