Like a lot of people, I’m pretty dependent on my smartphone for… well, everything. It’s my calculator, my alarm clock, my calendar, whatever you want. So when I stumbled upon this cube timer, on one side I thought, why would I need it? But I’m also a fan of simplicity and novelty, and the few steps it takes to set a timer on my phone can be overwhelming at times. Plus, reviews are raving about this time management gadget – and admittedly the thing is cute – so I was intrigued enough to try it out.
I didn’t know what to expect, but I never predicted that such a small tool would have such a big effect on my daily life!
At first glance, I loved that the 2.5 inch square size of this cube timer was small enough to fit in a kitchen drawer, but big enough that it wouldn’t get lost among my kids’ Legos. It only requires two triple A batteries (not included) and I didn’t have to read a five-page manual with ridiculously confusing photos describing how to use it.
It’s important to point out that this gadget comes in five colors – coral, mint, purple, white, and yellow – and each shade comes with different time presets, so you need to think about what you want to use it for. before you buy it. For example, the Mint version can be set in 1, 3, 5, and 10 minute increments, while the White version has presets for 5, 15, 30, and 60 minutes.
How it works: turn the switch on a low or high volume, decide what preset time you want, flip the cube so the desired time is facing up – and let the countdown begin. When the time is up, it emits a series of beeps and the discreet red light on the side of the cube stops flashing. Easy, right? Surely something so simple had to have a catch. So in blatant disbelief at the simplicity of this product, I set out to try it with my daily chores – instead of reaching for my smartphone.
It’s a great motivation for homework
My elementary-aged children have very little notion of time. My son, in particular, is a world-class staller at age eight, and he takes his time doing everything from eating cereal to putting on socks. Getting her to commit to her evening homework has always involved a lot of wasting time on her part and hassle on my part. But when offered to control the timing of his reading with this cube, he felt dizzy with excitement. He was suddenly energized – and shockingly, over the course of a few days, he was motivated to read longer.
We also used the Mooas Cube as a timer to “pick up the pace” in the morning before school to see if my son and daughter could be dressed and ready within a given time frame. I don’t know if it was the competitiveness of their siblings or if this cube is magic, but the speed at which they moved once I started the stopwatch was every parent’s dream. Overall, both loved its ease of use, and for one, I was happy that they didn’t have the digital distraction of my smartphone.
On a similar note, this cube timer also kept me focused while trying to check things out on my endless to-do list. Sitting in front of my computer, I would set it to 10 minutes so that I could set aside a set amount of time for resending emails or working on my family’s schedules. If I was distracted by some text or social media, the timer would bring me back to reality before I wasted two hours looking for a funny GIF or scrolling through Instagram.
It’s an upgrade to your old fashioned hourglass
Sure, your smartphone can come in handy for timing your enchiladas or oven-grilled salmon, but there are several advantages to having a separate device to keep tabs on dinner. First of all, using the cube timer means you won’t have to fumble around with your germ cell phone and get greasy fingerprints all over the process. Another advantage? If my dish wasn’t quite finished, I could quickly flip the cube sideways for a minute or three to give it a little more cooking time.
I also liked the fact that while cooking I could set the alarm to the highest volume, which made it easy for me to be heard over the stove fan or television that I have. usually lit in the background. One downside: Remember you can’t change time presets – what you order is what you get. So if you have to boil pasta for exactly eight minutes, that might not be ideal.
It will help you increase your workouts
When it comes to exercise, I quickly lose motivation because of the monotony. I have found that one of the most exciting and unexpected uses of this cube was when I was working out at home. It’s great for timing things like planks and wall squats because you don’t need to do multiple steps to set it up. It’s also perfect for timing high-intensity intervals like lunges or climbers, without the need for a trainer to keep tabs on your work hours and rest periods.
While I was initially skeptical of the Mooas Cube Timer, I may have barely scratched the surface of all of its uses. Then I’ll use it to take an afternoon nap.
