Traffic light countdowns in Navi Mumbai restored from Marathi to English | Bombay News

After displaying the countdown numbers in Marathi for nearly a week, traffic lights in the APMC market started to display them in English again; Officials at Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation say the numbers appeared in Marathi due to software glitches and was not an intentional move.

After displaying the countdown numbers in Marathi for almost a week, traffic lights in the APMC market started to display them in English again.

HT had reported last week that countdowns for several traffic lights in the market were showing the numbers in Marathi. It had also baffled motorists as many of them did not understand the Marathi numbers.

Officials from the NMMC’s electrical department then said they were doing it on a trial basis to understand the feasibility of the system. They also said they would take the opinions of motorists into consideration and take the next course of action accordingly.

Contradicting their own statements, they now say that the numbers appeared in Marathi due to software glitches and it was not an intentional move.

“We had no intention of changing the language from English to Marathi. This happened due to some glitches in the software and we fixed it earlier this week. Now all the traffic lights in the city display the countdown numbers in English, ”an official said on condition of anonymity.

Suman Mukherjee, 45, a resident of Vashi said: “It seems NMMC officials are now accusing the software of hiding their own random actions. Since the numbers have reappeared in English now, no one will face any problem. “
